Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong is one of the largest acute district hospitals of Hong Kong and also the teaching hospital for the University of Hong Kong Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
The Haifu Model JC Focused Ultrasound Tumour Therapeutic System was introduced into Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong in 2006, and led by Academician Sheung Tat Fan and Prof. Tan To Cheung, the Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong has been mainly used for the treatment of unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) and Uterine Fibroids.
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is now one of the treatment modalities in Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kong for HCC and has been used as bridging therapy for patients who are awaiting cadaveric donor liver transplantation.
This advanced therapy is completely extracorporeal and non-invasive, which will safely and efficiently ablate the tumours to alleviate symptoms, relieve pain, improve quality of life, and prolong the life span of patients without scar and bleeding. This technique undoubtedly provides a bright hope for the patients.
Up to 2020, this technique is widely used to treat benign and malignant tumours in H.K., the experts of Queen Mary Hospital of the University of Hong Kongl actively carrying out clinical research and using this technology in combination with other therapies to provide patients with suitable therapeutic plans. These research results are gathered in over 10 clinical papers and published on major world-renowned journals, like World Journal of Hepatology, World Journal of Surgery and etc.
Dr. Vincent YT CHEUNG
Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.
Underwent obstetrics and gynaecology training in Hong Kong and obtained Mem-bership and then Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecol-ogists from the United Kingdom in 1989 and 2001.
Obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Canada in 1995 and had been working there for over 20 years.
Currently working as Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, and President of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong.

- Minimally invasive gynaecological surgery
- Obstetrical and gynaecological sonography especially on: focused ultrasound therapy, and ectopic pregnancies
- Benign vulval conditions and sexual health.
Cheung Tan To
Dr. Tan To Cheung is currently the Chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery in Queen Mary Hospital, the University of Hong Kong. He is the honorary associate Professor of the University of Hong Kong and the council member of the Hong Kong Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Society.
Dr. Cheung is one of the leading experts in laparoscopic liver resection in Hong Kong. He has published the results of laparoscopic hepatectomy in Queen Mary Hospital in Annals of Surgery last year.
He is an active researcher in the field of liver transplant, complicated liver surgery, ALPPS procedures andminimally invasive surgery for liver cancer. Dr. Cheung has obtained his post graduate doctoral degree (Master of Surgery HKU) on the research of treatment of HCC in liver cirrhosis. He is the world leading expert in the area of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy for HCC.
He has been invited to present his research in various international meetings and he is serving as the editorial board members and reviewer of various international journals. Dr. Cheung has published more than 100 articles in international peer-reviewed journals including high impact journals like Gastroenterology, Annals of Surgery, Liver transplant and Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
