HIFU Unit in South Africa
Built in 2015 and headed by Dr. Raymond Setzen, the HIFU Unit was housed at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa. In Dr. Setzen’s opinion, HIFU reduces burden on health care system and helps patients return to work quicker. His studies with Chinese doctors found that “the majority of fibroids were T2 hypo-intense (44/53), which strongly predicted the efficacy of USgHIFU ablation in Black women” comparing with other races.
The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the 3rd largest hospital in the world as well as the largest hospital in Africa. It is a teaching hospital for the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School. 99% of its patients are black. HIFU treatment there for fibroids and adenomyosis is free of charge. Last September, the Hospital held a HIFU training workshop funded by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, training 22 doctors from 13 countries.
